Microplastic Research

Plastic and microplastic pollution is one of the main threats our Ocean is facing. Discover our work with research centers.

What is microplastic?

Microplastics are small pieces of plastic (less than 5mm). It is the most prevalent type of marine debris found in our Ocean, and they are harmful to marine wildlife and biodiversity.

A research expedition on microplastics

Together with Cape RADD, marine biology research center, and Yacht BOAZ, research vessel, we led an expedition to collect, separate and analyze pieces of microplastics off Cape Town, South Africa.

Results of the expedition

In a 2h cruise off Cape Town harbor, we collected 1,041 pieces of microplastics (<5mm) and 236 pieces of plastics (>5mm) using a Manta Trawl (thereafter).

The data was sent to 5Gyres, an international research organization specialized on plastic and microplastic pollution in our Ocean. We are now working with organizations raising awareness on plastic pollution worldwide.
